Thanks for posting, Rick! If I "polish" this group up a little and promote you to group admin over it, do you want to use it to cover tropical weather with?

With the formation of Hurricane Fred, the 2015 hurricane season is running slightly ahead of normal for named storms. If this trend continues, expect 10 or more named tropical cyclones for 2015. It looks like early season predictions for well below normal activity will be understated.

Also, the surprisingly rapid development of Fred (and Danny), although not likely sustained, hints at an environment able and ready to produce major hurricanes if conditions become favorable for a short time and a tropical cyclone is in the area.

And worth noting: Upper air steering currents along the East Coast seem primed for carrying a hurricane up the Eastern Seaboard and may linger into October.

From Rick Schwartz: "Final rainfall total in Alexandria, VA.: 3.70 inches. No damage, no flooding. Helpful storm as far as growing plants are concerned. For my latest take on the current hurricane season, visit www.midatlantichurricanes.com"

For Tropical Storm Andrea, I'm situated in Apopka, FL.. have a weather station.

On Thursday it was overcast all day.  I got a total of 2.03" of rain , and the highest wind gust was 28mph.

From Rick Schwartz: Steady rain began in Alexandria, Virginia, about 5:30 pm, on this Thursday. Mostly light. Tomorrow should be interesting. The combination of the tropical weather system and adjacent weather systems should give eastern sections of the Mid-Atlantic region some heavy rain, gusty winds near the coast and perhaps a few short-lived tornadoes. An unusually early start to hurricane season in this area.

Typhoon Pablo hit the Philippines recently. A friend of mine took pics of the damage. Here they are:

Given Sandy's intensity, scope, overall effects, explosive development and track, as well as being the second hurricane to make landfall in New Jersey in consecutive seasons (and in almost the same spot as Hurricane Irene!),it is unique in Mid-Atlantic hurricane annals for at least the past 400 years. I guess I'll have to add a new section for Sandy when I revise my book, Hurricanes and the Middle Atlantic States.

Incidentally, I recorded a storm peak gust of 65 mph at my Alexandria, VA, home and 6.25 inches rainfall as of noon on Tuesday.
