Hurricane Seaso 2013 Preview : Part One

In a little over a week's time, the 2013 Atlantic hurricane season will start and following the forecast from NOAA that this season will be more active than past seasons it raises the prospect of not just American impacts but British impacts as well. This is because, thanks to how hurricanes move, once they have finished with the United States they almost always take a right hander and barrel across the Atlantic giving us a terrible time about 72 hours after landfall in the United States.…See More

Britain just cannot seem to get a break

First we have the coldest March for over 50 years, then it is reported that for 33 days (straight) the temperature across Europe was below the average for that time of year and then just as things look as they are improving (London reaching a high of 68 today), guess what? It all goes wrong again!First it's a sandstorm in the Scottish Highlands then a forecast of temperatures dropping as a cold front crosses the country and…See More

Britain's Forgotten Spring : Day Fifteen

The cold is on it's last legs here in the United Kingdom as some parts of the country will today hit the dizzy heights of 10C (50F) (still well below the average of April of 12C (54F)) but as things start to warm up people are taking a chance to say "thank you" to everyone who helped during the worst of itCivil defence volunteers who gave 400 hours to help Isle of Man residents during the recent snow storms, have been praised by the government. The group was involved various rescue missions,…See More

Britain's Forgotten Spring : Day Fourteen

And it's not just Swansea that's dealing with that problem eitherFirefighters in Cumbria have dealt with a spate of grass fires, despite some parts of the county still being under several feet of snow. In the past week at least 20 grass and gorse fires have been tackled, with some being blamed on arsonists. Fire chiefs say an extended dry spell has left vegetation around Cleator Moor, Maryport, and Whitehaven excessively dry and easy to set alight. Yet hundreds of sheep have died in 20ft (6…See More

Britain's Forgotten Spring : Day Seven

It is now a week since Britain's spring stopped (although there are some people who claim it never really got started) and so it seems reasonable to see how the areas worst affected by the snow are coping. First up, south western Scotland and in particular the Isle of ArranEngineers are on course to reconnect all homes on the Isle of Arran nearly a week after supplies were cut off in heavy snow. Some islanders are spending a sixth day without mains electricity as Scottish and Southern Energy…See More
