Update on LWC Web Data Uploader and the new WeatherCat program

Dear WeatherBug community,

It has come to my attention that my LWC Web Data Uploader AppleScript fails to upload monthly rainfall data.  Unfortunately, I misunderstood the WeatherBug data upload protocol and I must sadly report that with the drought in California - I wasn't paying much attention to rainfall data.

Unfortunately, there is no practical fix within the AppleScript itself.  What would be needed is access to the statistics within Lightsoft Weather Center and that software has been discontinued.  There is good news nonetheless, because there is a successor to Lightsoft Weather Center called WeatherCat.  WeatherCat is now in public beta and Stuart Ball, the developer of WeatherCat has kindly consented to modify the AppleScript interface to provide access to monthly rainfall data.

A new version of WeatherCat is expected within a few days with this new feature.  As soon as it is available, I'll make a new version of LWC Web Data Uploader available that correctly uploads monthly rainfall.  However, this fix will only be available to users who upgrade to WeatherCat.

I am already switching all AppleScript development to only support WeatherCat as it has a number of important enhancements.  I already have a new prototype script running on my development platform that will eventually replace: LWC Web Data Uploader.  When the new script is ready for general use, I'll announce it here.  You can find more information on these AppleScripts at MacWeather.net.

Cheers, Edouard

Dear WeatherBug Macintosh users,

Beta-2 of WeatherCat was released this afternoon with a temporary extension to the AppleScript interface to allow for Monthly rainfall to be uploaded via my LWC Web Data Uploader script.  I have updated both my development and stable version of my script to upload the monthly rainfall data.  This can be seen being uploading correctly on my WeatherBug station upload page.  I would like to allow the script to run for a day or so to insure no surprises and then I shall make it available to the public.

Cheers, Edouard

Sounds good. I'll add WeatherCat to the Backyard Stations page then pull LWC after it's fully released.

Hi Nathan and WeatherBug community,

Thanks for asking.  At the moment I'm supporting both WeatherCat and LWC.  However, the next major release of my AppleScripts will be WeatherCat only.  So you could mention both programs for the immediate future, but soon enough I'll be only supporting WeatherCat.

Cheers, Edouard

Other quick question. Should I continue to link to LWC from our Backyard Stations page or swap out the link to WeatherCat since you're moving forward with that app? Thanks!

Sounds good. Yeah, all I need to do is have it long enough on my machine to shoot a video of publishing instructions. I'll also give you a copy of the video so you can post it on the WeatherCat site.

Dear Nathan and WeatherBug Mac community,

You ask if it would be possible to obtain a copy of WeatherCat in order to create some screencasts.  Actually WeatherCat is free to be evaluated to any Mac user during the public Beta.  All you need to do is register on the WeatherCat Forum and there you can download a copy to try.  The evaluation betas will remain free until the end of March when WeatherCat 1.0 is expected to be officially released.  All WeatherBug Mac users are welcome to give WeatherCat a try.

Cheers, Edouard

Sounds good. I'm going to shoot some screencasts in the near future on uploading data to WeatherBug, so when I do, can I get a test copy of the software temporarily long enough to shoot the video?
