Floyd, I have mine on the roof and put a "poly" water pipe as an extension on it to raise it to get above the neighbors roof. The birds like the rain collector rim so it gets blocked from time to time. Quite an effort to clear it so I have another gauge on the deck.

I have mine just out in my backyard in a place that's away from trees (so leaves don't clog up the rain collector). Since all DAVIS models come with radiation shielding, having it in direct sunlight shouldn't affect the readings too much. The standard mounting tripod you get from DAVIS may have a high enough pole to mount your station. If you feel your wind readings aren't accurate enough (especially since the Vue doesn't have a detachable wind sensor like the VP2 does), you could always get an extra pole kit from DAVIS and extend it up higher. Let me know if that helps or if you have more questions!
